A fruiting body
The bracket is the visible fruiting body. Fine fungal threads, called hyphae, can grow through the wood: the shelf is only part of the organism.

The forest keeps more than it shows.
Small enough to overlook.

A shelf on a tree. A life mostly out of sight.
The bracket is the visible fruiting body. Fine fungal threads, called hyphae, can grow through the wood: the shelf is only part of the organism.
Many bracket fungi have tiny pores underneath. Spores form on the surfaces of tubes opening into these pores and are released into the air. Not every bracket has pores.
Many wood-decaying fungi help recycle nutrients by breaking down wood. Some also grow in living trees and can weaken their wood. A bracket alone does not tell the whole story.
